Instagram DM Lead Scoring for Small Teams
Instagram DM lead scoring for a five-person shop is a tag and a rule of thumb, not a data-science product. CommentLink can add tags in a flow. It does not ship a predictive lead score. There is no marketed lead-score engine. Use keywords, whether they replied, and one fit answer. Then let humans pick the order.
A 0–100 score with no formula is fiction. “AI scored this lead 94” does not belong in the inbox if you did not define 94. Hot, warm, and later — based on signals you can defend — is enough to decide who gets a follow-up first.
How to apply the tags: tag Instagram leads by intent. When a human must take the thread: sales handoff criteria.
Why a small team still needs a hot-warm-later order
Viral Reels produce more threads than a closer can read. Without an order, sales opens the newest GUIDE comment while a BOOK reply waits. Scoring, in the honest sense, is just that order. It is not a model, and CommentLink will not pretend to sell one.
The point is staffing. Tags filter the inbox. Humans still decide. If you only have one person and one keyword, you do not need a score at all — you need to answer the thread. Add the hot-warm-later split when a second keyword or a spike makes the pile real. Do not install a scoring ritual in a week you could have answered every BOOK by hand.
How tags substitute for a score engine
On the keyword or after a button, add a short tag: buy, research, support, wholesale — or price, book, guide, other. Optionally add replied if they came back after the first DM (they found Requests). Optionally add soon if they named a timeline.
That is the whole “model.” Filter the inbox by buy + replied. Work those first. Research can get a later pass or no sales pass. CommentLink does not compute a predictive score from those tags. It stores the labels you attached. If you later sort a CSV by tag, that sort is still your rule of thumb. Do not import it back as “CommentLink scored these leads.” There is no scorer to import from.
Comment and DM signals you can actually defend
- Comment BOOK or DEMO. Tag buy. Hotter than GUIDE. The comment is the signal.
- Comment GUIDE. Tag research. Send the asset. Do not pretend this is a demo request.
- They reply after the first DM. They opened the folder well enough to type. Treat as warmer than silence. Still not an “open rate.”
- They name a city or a date. Tag soon or a city label you will use. Do not invent a numeric boost.
- They ask for a human or a custom quote. That is handoff, not a higher score. Stop the bot.
None of these require a scorer. All of them break if you hide them behind a fake 94.
Implementing a tag-based queue, not a predictor
Add the tag on the same flow that sends the first DM. Humans will not backfill 400 threads after a viral Reel. Keep the list small enough that the team still uses it.
Inbox: filter by tag. Assignment if you have more than one closer. No dashboard widget that ranks contacts 0–100. If you export to a spreadsheet, you can sort by tag yourself. That is still not a CommentLink lead-score product.
Do not send tags to a CRM as “score.” Send them as labels. If you later build your own formula in a sheet, that formula is yours. Do not market it as the product.
Show a new teammate the filter, not a dashboard widget. “Open buy, then buy plus replied, then soon” is a sentence they can run at 9am. A 0–100 column they cannot recopy is a toy. CommentLink will not grow that column for you.
Mistakes that invent a 0–100 Instagram lead score
- Putting “AI scored 94” on a thread with no definition of 94.
- Treating comments as leads and scoring the comment count.
- Scoring GUIDE the same as BOOK because both “engaged.”
- Buying a tool because it shows a score and assuming CommentLink has the same engine. It does not.
- Letting the number replace handoff: a custom quote is not “92, keep nurturing.”
Practices for a five-person inbox
Agree the tag list in writing. Four labels beat twenty. Review weekly whether anyone used other.
Sales owns buy. Content or whoever sent the magnet owns research. Support owns support. If one person is all three, they still filter — they just change hats.
When volume drops, ignore tags and answer everything. Scoring is a queue tool, not a religion.
If wholesale and consumer share an inbox, wholesale is its own hot lane even at low volume — those threads are rare and easy to miss under GUIDE. That is still a tag, not a predicted conversion probability.
A weekly ranking template that only uses tags
- Export or filter: buy + replied, then buy, then soon, then research.
- Count threads in each bucket for one post. No percentages required.
- Ask: did any custom or complaint sit in research by mistake? Fix the keyword.
- Ask: did we staff buy the same day? If not, the tags did not matter.
- Do not add a numeric column unless you wrote the formula and everyone can recopy it.
- If research outnumbers buy ten to one, that is a caption problem, not a scoring problem. Teach BOOK more clearly or accept that this Reel is a magnet.
When to stop scoring and just talk
Stop when the closer is waiting on a number instead of opening buy threads. Stop when you are designing a predictive model with five data points. Stop when the only “score” you can produce would be dishonest.
CommentLink will keep letting you tag. It will not grow a silent lead-score engine in the background. If you need a human, hand off. If you need a list, collect email. If you need an order, send the link you promised — do not wait for a score that does not exist.
A listing Reel queue that is only tags, 9am IST
Realtor, two keywords: TOUR and GUIDE. TOUR → tag buy. GUIDE → tag research. Closer at 9am IST opens buy, then buy plus replied, then soon (they named a date). GUIDE waits until afternoon if it waits at all. No 0–100 column. The sentence a new teammate can run is the product.
Wholesale jewellery sitting under consumer GUIDE is how a rare thread dies. Tag wholesale at the keyword even at low volume. That is still a label, not a predicted conversion probability. CommentLink does not compute a score from those tags.
What you cannot call a lead score
- “AI scored 94” with no formula.
- Comment count as heat.
- GUIDE and BOOK as the same engagement.
- A HubSpot score field CommentLink did not send — there is no native connector.
- A custom quote that should have been a handoff, kept in “nurture” because the number looked high.
If you export a CSV and sort by tag, that sort is yours. Do not import it back as “CommentLink scored these leads.” There is no scorer to import from.
Copyable Monday filter when volume drops
If the week produced twelve threads, ignore tags and answer everything. Scoring is a queue tool for spikes, not a religion. When the next Reel explodes, put the tags back: buy first, research later, support as a stop. If research outnumbers buy ten to one, fix the caption — teach BOOK more clearly or accept that the Reel is a magnet.
FAQ
Does CommentLink auto-score leads?
There is no marketed lead-score product. Tag by intent and let humans pick the order.
Can I build my own score in a spreadsheet?
Yes. That formula is yours. Do not treat it as a CommentLink feature, and do not put unexplained numbers in the inbox.
What signals are fair game?
Keyword, whether they replied, and one fit answer you asked for. Not comment count, not a fake open rate, not “AI 94.”
Should GUIDE threads get a low score?
They should get a research tag, not a punishment. Send the asset. Do not put them on the sales calendar. That is routing, not a numeric dunk.
Do tags sync to HubSpot as a score?
There is no native HubSpot connector. If you export or webhook labels, send them as labels. Do not invent a score field in our product.
When is scoring unnecessary?
One keyword, one closer, low volume. Answer the threads. Add tags when the pile is real.
Can I treat comment volume as a score?
No. Comments are comments. Keyword, reply, and one fit answer are fair signals. Count is not heat.
Should wholesale get a numeric boost?
Give it its own tag and open it even at low volume. That is a lane, not a predicted probability CommentLink computed.
What does the closer open first at 9am?
buy, then buy plus replied, then soon. Research if there is time. Write that sentence. Do not wait on a 0–100 widget.
