Follow-Gates on Trial Reels and Viral Non-Followers

A follow-gate withholds the link until they follow and tap that they did. Trial Reels and most viral Reels are built to reach people who do not follow you. That collision is the article: you can protect a magnet, or you can actually send the file the comment asked for. You usually cannot maximise both on tourist traffic.

CommentLink has a follow-gate that checks Meta’s follower field after they tap — see how follow-gates actually work and the follow-gate hub. There is no Trial Reels product mode. If Meta delivers a comments webhook for that media, a normal comment rule might fire. If it does not, the rule sits idle. Test. When not to gate at all: when not to use a follow-gate.

Why follow-gates collide with Trial Reel traffic

Trial distribution is an Instagram experiment aimed at people who are not already in your following. A gate asks those same people for a follow before the prize. Some will follow. Many will bounce — including people whose DM already landed in Requests, where they may never tap I’m following.

This is not a CommentLink “Trial Reels switch.” Treat Trial media like any other Reel only after a second-account test shows comments trigger. Background on the experiment: Trial Reels and DM automation.

How a CommentLink follow-gate actually checks

  1. They comment the keyword on media that has a comment rule.
  2. If the gate is on, the first DM is a gate card, not the prize.
  3. They tap I’m following (button copy is yours to set).
  4. CommentLink reads Meta’s is_user_follow_business field — not an honour system.
  5. If they follow, the payload sends. If they do not, you do not owe them the file.
  6. Non-followers still often sit in Requests even after a successful send. The gate does not force Primary.

Sample viral comments: gated versus ungated DMs

Photography preset Reel that Instagram is testing as a Trial. Caption: “Comment PRESET.” Ungated DM: “Lightroom preset pack: [URL]. Check Requests.” Gated DM first: “Follow + tap I’m following and I’ll send the pack.” Tourist traffic will split. If the job is emails for a paid pack you refuse to give tourists, gate. If the job is sending the pack because the Reel is the funnel, skip the gate.

Street-food map Reel gone wide. Comment MAP. You want anyone who commented to get the map. Gate here fights the distribution. Send the map.

Private masterclass replay you will not give non-followers. Gate is coherent. Teach it in the caption so they are not surprised.

Implementing on viral media without a Trial Reels mode

  1. Confirm comments on that specific Trial or viral Reel fire your rule — test account, not a guess.
  2. Decide the job: follow growth versus send completion.
  3. If send completion wins, leave the gate off.
  4. If follow growth wins, turn the gate on and accept fewer sends.
  5. Caption both paths: Requests, and (if gated) the tap.
  6. Do not look for a Trial Reels toggle in CommentLink. It is not a product mode.

Gate mistakes on non-follower traffic

  • Gating a paid SKU link you wanted everyone to buy. Instead: send the product URL; gate a bonus PDF if you must.
  • Assuming Trial Reels skip Requests. Instead: expect Requests.
  • Honour-system “just follow” without the Meta check. Instead: use the real gate or don’t bother.
  • Gating support keywords (ISSUE, ORDER). Instead: never gate complaints.
  • Not testing whether Trial comments webhook at all. Instead: test before you teach PRESET.
  • Identical first messages at huge viral volume. Instead: vary copy; still expect some Hidden Requests.

Testing habits before you lock the prize

  • Non-follower test account: comment, find the DM, tap the gate if on.
  • Follower test account: confirm you are not annoying people who already follow.
  • Run 48 hours ungated versus gated on similar Reels if you can, and compare sends versus follows — your numbers, not ours.
  • If comments never fire on that Trial Reel, the gate debate is moot. Use a normal Reel.

Copyable gate-versus-send experiment

Reel A (ungated): keyword MAP → map URL. Caption: “Comment MAP — check Requests.”

Reel B (gated): keyword MAP → gate card → map URL. Caption: “Comment MAP, follow, tap I’m following.”

Stop if they write HUMAN, ISSUE, or REFUND — gate or not.

Do not declare a winner from one post. Distribution is noisy.

Requests plus a gate is two extra taps

Non-followers often find the DM in Requests. A follow-gate then asks them to follow and tap I’m following before the file. That is two extra steps on traffic Instagram just found for you. Some will do it for a scarce masterclass. Most will not do it for a map of street-food stalls. Design the gate for the prize, not for a default “growth” habit.

Caption should name both frictions if both exist: “Comment MAP. If you don’t follow us, check Requests. If we asked you to follow first, tap I’m following in the DM.” A caption that only says “link in DM” will produce “you never sent it” tickets you cannot see from the business side.

If the Trial Reel never fires comments into your rule, none of this matters. Test the webhook first — there is no Trial Reels mode to toggle.

When the prize is a purchase versus a magnet

A paid SKU URL is usually a send-completion job: they commented PRICE, they should get the product page. Gating that URL taxes buyers Instagram already spent distribution to find. A bonus PDF, a private replay, or a community you refuse to open to tourists is a follow-growth job. Put the gate on the magnet, not on checkout.

Do not run both jobs on one keyword. MAP gated and MAP ungated on the same media is a mess. Use two Reels or two words (MAP vs MAPVIP) if you insist on testing.

When to drop the gate or take the thread yourself

Drop the gate when the comment is a purchase intent you do not want to tax with an extra tap. Take the thread yourself when they say the gate is broken, they already follow, or they are angry about a missing file. The check can lag; a human can send the URL once.

Trial Reels remain Instagram’s experiment. Recheck Instagram Help when you next launch. We will not pretend we have a dedicated mode.

A paid SKU Reel versus a private workshop replay

SKU Reel Instagram is pushing to non-followers. Caption: “Comment PRICE.” Ungated DM: “Checkout: [URL]. Check Requests.” Gate here taxes buyers the distribution just found. Send the URL.

Private workshop replay you will not give tourists. Caption: “Comment REPLAY, follow, tap I’m following.” Gated DM first: the gate card. Then the replay URL. Teach both frictions: Requests, and the tap. That collision is coherent because the prize is scarce on purpose.

Do not run both jobs on one keyword on one Reel. PRICE gated and PRICE ungated on the same media is a mess. Two Reels, or PRICE versus REPLAY.

“I already follow” at 1am IST when the check lags

Viral hours are not support hours. The Meta follower field can lag after they tap I’m following. A human can send the URL once. Do not loop the gate card. Do not argue in public comments. Last automated line if they write HUMAN or ISSUE: stop — even if the gate is on.

Trial Reels remain Instagram’s experiment. There is no Trial Reels product mode in CommentLink. If comments on that media never webhook, the gate debate is moot. Test a second account before you lock a prize behind a follow.

What a follow-gate still cannot do on tourist traffic

  • Force Primary. Placement is Instagram’s. Requests plus a gate is two extra taps.
  • Fire if Meta never sends the comment event on that Trial Reel.
  • Replace an honour-system “just follow.” The product checks is_user_follow_business after the tap.
  • Gate ISSUE, ORDER, or refund. Support is not a magnet.

FAQ

Should I follow-gate a Trial Reel?

Only if you value the follow more than the send. Trial traffic is mostly non-followers. Test both.

Does CommentLink have a Trial Reels mode?

No. A comment rule may fire if Meta sends the comment event. Verify on that media.

Does the gate put the DM in Primary?

No. It withholds the payload until the follow check passes. Placement is still Instagram’s.

Can I gate ISSUE or refund keywords?

You should not. Support is not a lead magnet.

What if they follow but the send never comes?

They tap I’m following, then we re-read Meta’s field. If it still fails, a human sends once — do not loop the gate.

Where do I read the product behaviour?

How follow-gates work, when not to use one, and the follow-gate hub — those pages describe the tap-plus-check, not an honour system.

Should I gate PRICE on a viral product Reel?

Usually no. That is a send-completion job. Gate a replay or a bonus PDF you refuse to give tourists, not checkout.

What if they follow at 1am and the file never arrives?

They tap I’m following, then we re-read Meta’s field. If it still fails, a human sends once. Do not loop the gate.

Can I gate and still skip Requests?

No. The gate withholds the payload. It does not move the thread to Primary.
