Instagram's Native Comment-to-DM vs CommentLink

It is no longer honest to say Instagram cannot do comment-to-DM. In Business Suite, custom keywords (Comment to Message) watch a post or Reel and send a DM when the comment matches. For a small launch, that native path is the right first step.

What native Custom Keywords do well

• No extra vendor. You stay inside Meta.
• A keyword on a specific post or Reel.
• A private message with your copy and a link.
• The same Professional account you already use for ads and inbox.

Where native usually stops

Public write-ups of the native tool (including competitor explainers we reviewed in 2026) describe a hard hourly cap: once Instagram will not send more automated DMs, later matching comments are dropped, not queued. Matching is also thinner than “contains / exclude / all comments.” There is no CommentLink-style follow-gate that calls is_user_follow_business after a tap. There is no shared Instagram + WhatsApp workspace with your team’s assignments.

Use native if one keyword, one post, and low volume is the whole job. Use CommentLink when comments would otherwise be dropped at the cap, when you need a verified follow before the link, or when the same people answer Instagram and WhatsApp.
