Story Mention Thank-You DMs

Automated thank-you DM triggered by an Instagram Story mention

A Story mention is user-generated advertising you did not have to beg for in a comment thread. Most accounts still reply six hours later, or never, because Stories expire and notifications pile up. CommentLink’s STORY_MENTION trigger sends a DM when that mention event arrives through Instagram’s webhooks — typically a thank-you, optionally a link back to the product they filmed.

This is not a follow-when-they-follow webhook. Instagram does not give third-party apps a reliable public “new follower” firehose to market on. It is also not a Reel comment automation. If they commented on your Reel, that is a different trigger. Auto-reply surfaces are listed on Instagram auto reply.

What STORY_MENTION is

Someone puts your @ in their Story (or Instagram delivers a mention event for your Professional account). Meta can notify connected apps. CommentLink can send them a private DM: thanks, optional UGC permission ask, optional URL.

Story reply is adjacent but not identical: STORY_REPLY is when they reply to your Story. Mention is when they feature you in theirs. Configure the one that matches the behaviour you actually get.

Copy that does not waste the mention

Example: “Thanks for the Story — made our morning. If you want the exact jacket from the Reel, it’s here: https://example.com/jacket. If you’d rather we just like the Story and stay quiet, ignore this.”

Example (permission): “Can we reshare that Story to ours? Reply YES and we’ll credit you. Either way, thank you.”

Skip the hard follow-gate on a thank-you mention unless the mention was clearly a “link in bio” style demand. They already did you a favour in public. Taxing them with I’m following before a thank-you is how UGC dries up.

Optional link, not a bait-and-switch

A link is fair when they mentioned a product. It is not fair when they mentioned you as a friend and you reply with an affiliate dump. One URL, named. Same disclosure rules as any other DM.

CommentLink still does not turn a Story mention into a WhatsApp message. If you want them on WhatsApp, put a wa.me they can choose to tap.

Setup

  1. Professional Instagram, Page linked, Meta login.
  2. Create an automation with the Story mention trigger, not a feed comment keyword.
  3. Write the thank-you DM. Add a link only if it belongs.
  4. Publish. Test by mentioning the business from a second account’s Story, then check that tester’s Message Requests.

Testing from the same account is as unreliable here as with comments. Use a second login.

What this will not do

  • It will not DM everyone who follows you the moment they hit Follow.
  • It will not auto-repost their Story. Reshare is still a human or native Instagram action.
  • It will not run after the Story expires if Meta never delivered the mention event.
  • It will not bypass the hourly Instagram DM cap. A mention storm is still a queue-or-drop problem.

When a human should still reply

Celebrities, huge retailers, or a mention that includes a complaint. The automation can send the thank-you; a person should read the Story. Handoff exists in the flow builder for a reason. Automation is for the volume of ordinary UGC, not for crisis comms.

Story reply versus Story mention, side by side

They reply to your Story: STORY_REPLY. Use that for “swipe / reply for the link” stickers and for questions on a Story that expires in 24 hours. They put you on their Story: STORY_MENTION. Use that for thank-you and optional product URL. Configuring only comment-to-DM on Reels covers neither.

A person can do both in one day. Keep the copy distinct so you do not send the catalogue thank-you on a complaint they typed as a Story reply. If you are unsure which event fired, look at the thread in the inbox rather than guessing from the public Story, which may already have expired.

UGC permission without sounding like a contract bot

Asking “can we reshare?” in the same DM as the thank-you is reasonable. Demanding a signed release in the first bubble is how mentions stop. If you need a release for ads, send the thank-you first, then a second message with the form after they reply YES. That second send still sits inside Instagram’s messaging window and the hourly cap.

Do not scrape mentioners into a cold list for later. If they mentioned you once in 2024, that is not a 2026 outreach licence. Official APIs plus a live mention event is the line this product stays on.

Expiry, missed webhooks, and the hourly cap

Stories disappear. If Meta never delivered the mention webhook, CommentLink cannot invent the event the next morning. Do not promise “we always DM in 10 seconds.” Promise that when the event arrives, the thank-you is ready.

A mention storm (a celebrity tags you, or a duet trend) shares the same ~200 Instagram DMs/hour budget as comment-to-DM. If a Reel is also viral that hour, mention thank-yous wait in the safety queue. Native tools typically drop. Prioritise: pause the less important automation so the cap serves UGC or the catalogue, not both poorly.

Testing mentions without embarrassing the brand

Use a second account. Publish a Story that @ the business. Check Message Requests. Delete or archive the tester Story if you do not want it on the grid of a public tester. Do not test by commenting “story” on a Reel. Do not test by following the account and expecting a mention DM — that would be the follower webhook we refuse to market.

If the business is already well known, a tester Story that is public may get seen. Use a private tester account or a Story close-friends list that still delivers a mention event you can verify. Confirm the DM copy does not include a checkout URL you would not send to a friend who was being kind.

After go-live, sample real mention threads in the inbox. If half are complaints filmed in Story form, tighten the automation so it thanks and hands off instead of pitching. UGC is not always a compliment. Automation that cannot tell the difference should stay short and human-reviewable. A complaint that got a product link is worse than a slow human reply, and it still spends a slot in the hourly cap. Keep mention copy thank-you-first so a complaint is not auto-pitched.

Coordinate with comment-to-DM in the same hour. A viral Reel plus a mention storm share the ~200 Instagram DMs/hour pace. Pause the less important send so the cap serves the moment you actually care about. Native tools typically drop the overflow; CommentLink queues. Neither creates extra Meta quota. Do not stack a catch-all comment rule on top of mention thank-yous during a celebrity tag. If the mention DM includes a link, name the destination the way you would in a LINK comment template, and disclose affiliates. Do not send a different SKU than the one they filmed. A wrong URL after UGC is how mentions stop. Thank them first, then link only if the SKU is obvious. If it is not obvious, ask which piece in the next message.

FAQ

Is this the same as Story auto-reply?

Story auto-reply usually means they replied to your Story (STORY_REPLY). Mentions are STORY_MENTION. Set both if you need both.

Can I require a follow before the thank-you?

You can attach a follow-gate technically. For UGC thank-yous it is usually the wrong social contract. Use gates on link-for-comment campaigns instead; see how follow-gates work.

Does native Instagram do mention thank-yous?

Business Suite features change. If native covers your case, use it. CommentLink is for when you want the same workspace as comment-to-DM and WhatsApp inbox.

Will this message people who tagged us in a feed post?

Feed tags and Story mentions are different events. Do not assume one automation covers both.

Should the thank-you include a follow-gate?

Usually no. They already featured you in public. Gate the catalogue Reel, not the UGC thank-you. If you only mention-DM people to force a follow, they will stop mentioning you. The follow-gate article is for link-for-comment campaigns.

How fast must I send?

Stories expire in 24 hours. Send when the webhook arrives. Do not promise a time you cannot keep during a viral hour when the safety queue is full. A late thank-you is still better than a cold DM next week to someone whose Story is gone.

Can I attach the product they filmed if I am not sure which SKU it is?

If you cannot tell, do not guess a URL. Thank them and ask which piece in a short follow-up, or hand off. A wrong checkout link after UGC is how you create returns and angry mentions.

Is NEW_FOLLOWER a substitute for mentions?

No. We do not market auto-DM on follow. Mentions are a specific Story event. Follows are not a reliable public webhook for this product. Do not configure mention copy and expect it to fire when someone hits Follow.
