How to Create a PDF Lead Magnet and Deliver It From Your Bio

If you’ve been wondering how to create a lead magnet PDF, the hard part isn’t the design. It’s choosing a problem small enough to solve on one or two pages. Pick that, and you can go from idea to a live download in an afternoon, without design software or a big budget.

Here’s the whole process, following one made-up example: Ravi, a freelance accountant, creating a “Tax documents checklist for freelancers”.

Pick one problem

A good PDF lead magnet solves something specific that your audience already cares about. Ravi could write a 40-page guide to freelance taxes. Very few people would finish it. A checklist of the documents to gather before filing solves one real problem, in minutes.

Test your idea with these questions:

  • Do people already ask about this? Check your DMs, comments and client calls.
  • Can someone use it today? If it needs a week of study, make it smaller.
  • Does it lead naturally to what you sell? Ravi’s checklist reaches people who may need an accountant.
  • Can you describe it in one line? You’ll need that line for your posts and page.

If you’re short of ideas, browse these lead magnet ideas. If you’re unsure whether to ask for an email, read gated vs ungated content first.

Outline in 30 minutes

Don’t open a design tool yet. Write everything in a plain document:

  1. Title: what it is and who it’s for. “Tax documents checklist for freelancers”.
  2. One-sentence intro: what it helps with, and how to use it.
  3. The core content: the checklist, template or steps.
  4. A short note on limits: in Ravi’s case, that rules vary and it isn’t tax advice.
  5. What to do next: one line about how to get more help from you.

Cut anything that isn’t needed to solve the problem. Background, your life story and long introductions can all go. A reader who wanted a checklist doesn’t need three paragraphs before the first tick box.

Design for phone reading

Most people will open your PDF on the same phone they found you on. A layout designed for an A4 printout can be painful on a small screen.

  • Use large text. Body text that looks big on your laptop may be about right on a phone.
  • Use one column. Multiple columns mean pinching and scrolling sideways.
  • Keep lines and sections short. Use headings, lists and white space.
  • Use strong contrast. Dark text on a light background is safest.
  • Limit images. Only keep the ones that help.
  • Make links obvious. Spell out what a link does, and test it from the PDF.

A free design tool or a word processor is fine for this. Choose a simple template, add your logo and colours and stop. Open the result on your phone before you decide it’s finished.

Export and check size

Export it as a PDF, then check a few things:

Check Why
File size BioFlow accepts PDFs up to 10 MB, but smaller files open faster on mobile data
Fonts and images Make sure they look right after export
Links Tap each one on a phone
File name People will see it: tax-documents-checklist.pdf is better than final-v7.pdf
Accuracy Read it once more, especially dates, prices and legal or financial points

If your file is large, images are the usual cause. Compress them or use fewer. Ask someone else to read it through as well. If your topic touches on health, finance or the law, be careful about what you promise, and consider a professional review.

Upload to a File downloads block

On BioFlow, add a File downloads block to your page, and upload your PDF. Write a clear heading, a line of description, and a button label such as “Get the checklist”. Then make three decisions.

Require email or not

This setting is on by default.

Setting What happens Choose it when
Email required Visitors enter an address to unlock the file. They appear in your Leads inbox and Contacts You want to follow up
Email not required Anyone can download. It counts as an unlock and adds an entry to your Leads inbox, but with no contact details You want the widest reach

If you require an email, say so plainly. The block has no consent checkbox, so if you need specific consent for marketing, collect that elsewhere, such as in a Form block or your email tool.

Cover image

You can add a cover image, up to 2 MB. It’s optional. A simple picture of your first page can show people what they’re getting.

Availability dates

You can set start and end dates. That’s useful for seasonal resources. Ravi might make the checklist available only during tax season, or add an end date to a limited offer. Downloads are refused outside that window.

Files aren’t exposed as public links on your page. Each person gets a short-lived download link.

Remember that a page needs at least one enabled Link block before it can be published, so add a link to your website or services as well.

Optional email delivery

You can also turn on email delivery, which sends the download link to the visitor’s inbox after they claim it. They still get an instant download on the page, and it still works if the email doesn’t go through.

This is useful for people who are on the move and want to read it later. It also helps them to recognise your name later on. It’s a one-off delivery, though, not an automated sequence. BioFlow doesn’t send follow-up emails for you.

Promote it

A lead magnet won’t promote itself. Use these spots:

  1. Your bio’s last line: “Free tax documents checklist ↓”
  2. The top of your page, while you’re actively promoting it.
  3. Relevant posts. Show one item from the checklist, and mention that the full version is free.
  4. Stories. Use a link sticker and explain who it’s for.
  5. A comment keyword. If your audience comments more than it clicks, you can deliver it by DM from a Reel.

Then look at what happens. Compare your Lead magnet unlocks with the entries in your Leads inbox that include an email, and read the replies you get. If people download it but never respond, the topic may be too far from what you sell. To turn those addresses into a list, see growing your email list. If you plan to sell a paid version later, automation for digital products covers that route, with payment handled on another service.

FAQ

What size should a lead magnet be?

Keep the file as small as you reasonably can, because many people will open it on mobile data. BioFlow accepts PDFs up to 10 MB, but a text-based checklist can be far smaller. If your file is large, compress your images or use fewer of them.

How many pages should a PDF lead magnet be?

Only as many as it takes to solve the problem. One or two pages suits a checklist or template, and a short guide might run to six. A long PDF can look impressive, but many readers won’t finish it, and a smaller file is quicker to make and test.

How do I send it automatically?

Upload it to a tool that delivers it for you. On BioFlow, a File downloads block gives each visitor a download, and you can turn on email delivery to send them the link too. For delivery in Instagram messages, a comment-to-DM automation can send it when someone comments a keyword.

Ship the small version

Don’t wait until your PDF feels perfect. Publish one useful page, watch how people respond, and improve it from there. Knowing how to create a lead magnet PDF matters less than getting one in front of real people. When it’s ready, upload your PDF to BioFlow.
