Welcome Openers on Instagram
Welcome openers fire when someone opens a conversation with you in Instagram Direct — icebreaker questions they can tap instead of staring at a blank composer. They are Instagram welcome message automation. They are not comment-to-DM. Mixing the two in one mental model is why people “test openers” by commenting PRICE on a Reel and then file a bug.
On CommentLink’s free plan you can run up to four welcome openers. Connect Instagram with Meta login on a Professional account. Native Business Suite has its own icebreaker-style controls; use Meta’s UI if you only need that and nothing else.
What the person actually sees
They start a DM. Instead of only a text field, they see tappable questions you wrote: Book a call, Where is my order, Wholesale, The size chart. Each tap is a structured start so your inbox (or a keyword automation) can route.
That moment is inbound intent. They already chose to message you. Comment-to-DM is outbound-to-them after they spoke in public on a post. Different API trigger, different copy, different success metric.
How this differs from comment-to-DM
- Trigger: inbox open / new DM versus a comment on media.
- Public proof: openers are private. Comment automations can also public-reply.
- Keywords: openers are questions you list. Comment automations match PRICE, LINK, or catch-all.
- Quota: both spend Instagram messaging budget if they send messages. A viral Reel still dwarfs opener traffic.
If the goal is “comment LINK, get the URL,” do not configure openers and call it done. Use comment-to-DM. If the goal is “people already slide in and ask the same four things,” openers are the right tool, described on Instagram DM automation and features.
Writing four openers that get tapped
Name the outcome, not your department. “Track order” beats “Support.” “See the ₹ price list” beats “Sales.” “Book a 15-min call” beats “Let’s chat.”
Four is a budget, not a target. Two good openers outperform four overlapping ones. The free-plan limit is four; you are allowed to use one.
Do not duplicate a comment keyword as an opener unless the inbound DM audience is actually saying that. People who comment GUIDE on a Reel never see openers unless they also start a DM.
What to attach behind a tap
A saved reply, a template card, or a flow that collects email. Keep the first response as short as a comment-to-DM. If the tap is “Talk to a human,” the next step should be handoff, not three more bot questions.
Welcome openers are a bad place to hide affiliate links nobody asked for. They chose a question. Answer it.
Setup notes that prevent false bugs
- Confirm the Instagram channel is connected and the openers are enabled, not merely drafted.
- Test by starting a DM from a second account that does not already have an open thread, when possible. Existing threads may not look like a “new conversation” icebreaker.
- Do not test by commenting on a post.
- If you also run DM keyword automations, make sure a tap and a typed sentence do not double-fire confusing copy. Read both configs.
When to skip openers
You never receive inbound DMs; all demand is comments on Reels. You already pinned a Story with the four answers. Your brand is a personal creator who wants every inbound DM to feel handwritten and you actually answer them. Openers are optional furniture.
Four example sets (steal the structure, not the voice)
Ecommerce: “Track my order”, “Size chart”, “Wholesale”, “Talk to a human.” Behind track: a portal URL. Behind size: the chart image. Behind wholesale: collect-email for a line sheet. Behind human: handoff.
Coach: “See programme fees”, “Book a 15-min call”, “Free guide”, “I’m already a client.” Fees and book should match the PRICE and BOOK DMs you send from comments so the account does not contradict itself.
Local service: “Areas you cover”, “Emergency vs booked”, “Price list”, “WhatsApp us.” The last one can be a wa.me. It is still not an automated comment→WhatsApp send.
Creator / UGC: “Collab rates”, “The gear I used”, “Mailing list”, “Just saying hi.” “Just saying hi” should hand off or send a short human-sounding thanks, not a catalogue.
Openers versus smart menus versus DM keywords
Welcome openers appear at conversation start. A smart menu is persistent navigation some products show in-thread. DM keyword automations fire when they type PRICE inside an already open DM. You can run all three badly at once: opener says Book, they type BOOK, a keyword also sends the calendar, and a menu offers Book again. Pick one primary path per intent.
Comment keywords on Reels do not read opener configuration. Someone who comments BOOK never sees the opener unless they also start a DM. That is why this article exists separately from comment-to-DM.
Free-plan limit of four, in practice
The product enforces four welcome openers on the free plan when billing limits are on. Use fewer. Four overlapping sales pitches train people to ignore icebreakers the same way they ignore link-in-bio. If you need a fifth, that is usually a sign you should split intents: comments for campaign keywords, openers for inbound support, and the inbox for everything else.
Disable an opener you are not proud of instead of leaving it live “for completeness.” Taps on a stale “Diwali sale” opener in March are how you earn blocks.
QA that is not a comment
From a second account that does not already have an open thread, open the business profile, tap Message, and look for the questions. Tap each one. Confirm the payload. If you only test as the business talking to itself, you will ship openers nobody else can see. If nothing appears, the channel may be disconnected, the openers may be toggled off, or Instagram may not show icebreakers on that surface that week — re-check Meta’s own icebreaker settings if you also configured them in Business Suite so you are not fighting two UIs.
Record which four questions you shipped and which flow or saved reply sits behind each. When a teammate edits an opener in place, they can accidentally point “Track order” at last year’s sale URL. Openers live longer than campaign Reels; they rot in silence because nobody comments them. Put a calendar reminder to tap all four from a tester monthly.
If inbound DMs are rare, do not spend a week on opener copy. Spend it on the Reel keyword. Openers shine when people already message you and ask the same things. Comment-to-DM shines when they will not message first. Most CommentLink accounts need the comment path before they need icebreakers. The free-plan cap of four is there so you cannot turn the inbox into a menu of twelve pitches.
Keep the voice aligned with comment DMs. If comments get a calm PRICE reply and openers get a shouty sales menu, the account feels like two vendors. Steal structure from the template article; do not paste the same paragraph into both surfaces if the trigger is different. Review the four questions whenever you change the comment keywords so inbound DMs and public comments do not contradict each other on price or booking rules. If an opener promises a free call and the comment BOOK DM sells a paid one, fix one of them before the weekend inbox fills with arguments.
FAQ
How many welcome openers does the free plan allow?
Four. The product enforces that limit when billing is enabled on the free plan.
Are welcome openers the same as Story reply automation?
No. Story replies and Story mentions are separate triggers. Openers are for people who open your inbox.
Will openers send if I pause Auto DM?
Treat workspace-level send pauses as applying to automated sends. If you are testing a pause, verify with a second account instead of assuming.
Can I use openers without comment-to-DM?
Yes. They are independent. Many shops use both.
Will Instagram show my openers on every device?
Icebreakers are a Meta inbox feature. Surfaces change. Test from a second account on iOS and Android if this is a primary acquisition path. If Business Suite also has icebreakers configured, you can get overlapping questions. Pick one UI to own.
What happens if they type instead of tapping?
Then it is an inbound DM, not an opener tap. DM keyword automations and humans in the inbox still apply. Write keywords for the sentences people type when they ignore buttons. Do not assume four openers cover the language of your audience.
Can openers collect email?
A tap can start a flow that uses COLLECT_EMAIL. That is still not comment-to-DM. Someone who commented GUIDE on a Reel never saw the opener. If the list is the goal, put collect on the comment automation too, or accept that only inbox starters join the list.
Are openers allowed under Meta’s rules?
They are a documented icebreaker-style inbox feature when sent through official APIs on a Professional account. They are not a licence to pitch prohibited goods. They are not cold DMs; the person opened the thread.
