ManyChat Pricing vs a Free Instagram DM Tool

Visual comparison of a paid Instagram automation plan and a free Instagram DM automation option.

This is a pricing article, not a second “ManyChat alternative” landing page. The commercial comparison already lives at ManyChat alternative for Instagram and CommentLink vs ManyChat. Read this when the question is how ManyChat’s Instagram DM work gets billed versus a tool that does not meter contacts — and versus native Comment to Message, which has no SaaS invoice at all.

ManyChat can send Instagram DMs from comments. The bill is not “per DM” in the ReplyRush sense. It is Active Contacts (and plan/channel gates) on the public model described for accounts created on or after 2 March 2026. Numbers below are a snapshot from August 2026. Confirm on manychat.com/pricing and help.manychat.com before you buy or cancel.

What ManyChat was publicly billing in August 2026

For accounts created on or after 2 March 2026, ManyChat described a new pricing model. The Free plan was listed at $0, with 25 Active Contacts per month and 2 channels. That is a real free tier. It is also a small contact bucket for a Reel that works.

On ManyChat’s public pricing page as of 20 August 2026, Essential started at $14/month with 250 Active Contacts included, then overage. Confirm the live Essential (or equivalent) price, included contacts, and your billing country on manychat.com/pricing. This article will not invent a full paid grid or tax.

WhatsApp, seats, and extra channels were plan-gated on that public snapshot. If Instagram is one lane in a larger ManyChat account, the Active Contact meter is the number that will move when comment-to-DM starts working.

What an Active Contact is (in practice)

Treat it as: a person who became “active” in the billing window because automation or conversation happened — not “everyone who ever followed you.” Read ManyChat’s current definition on their help centre. The important conversion fact is that a successful comment-to-DM campaign creates contacts on purpose. A viral Reel can spend the Free 25 before lunch.

What “free Instagram DM tool” can mean

  • Native Meta Comment to Message / Custom Keywords: $0 SaaS. Instagram DMs have no per-message fee from Meta. Hourly automated-DM cap still applies; later matches are typically dropped, not queued.
  • CommentLink: no CommentLink invoice for Instagram comment-to-DM, no contact meter on our side. Meta’s send cap still applies; Smart Send Queue holds the overflow instead of dropping it. WhatsApp conversation fees stay Meta’s if you connect WhatsApp.
  • Other vendors’ free plans: often a DM pack (ReplyRush, LinkDM) or a contact cap (ManyChat). “Free” is a ceiling, not a philosophy.

If the Instagram job is one keyword and quiet volume, native is the cheapest honest answer. If the job is comment-to-DM plus a queue, follow-gate, or WhatsApp inbox, you are comparing SaaS meters — see free Instagram DM automation for what CommentLink actually includes.

Instagram DMs you pay for twice if you are not careful

You never pay Meta a per-message fee for Instagram DMs. You can still pay a vendor for the right to automate them (contacts, credits, seats). WhatsApp is the opposite: Meta bills conversation categories to your WABA whether the tool is ManyChat or CommentLink. Do not compare “ManyChat WhatsApp” to “CommentLink WhatsApp” as if one vendor swallowed Meta’s fee.

A follow-gate and an email collect create extra messages inside the same hourly cap. They do not create extra ManyChat contacts by magic — but each person who talks to the bot is the kind of person Active Contact billing is designed to count. Check ManyChat’s current rules for what starts a contact.

A worked example (order of magnitude, not a quote)

You post a Reel: comment PRICE for the size chart. 400 people comment in an afternoon. Instagram will not send 400 automated DMs in the first hour. Native drops the tail. A queued tool sends the tail later. ManyChat Free’s 25 Active Contacts, if that is still the public cap when you read this, is a different ceiling — you can hit it long before you hit 200 DMs/hour.

If those 400 people were going to become Active Contacts on a paid ManyChat plan, the bill is a contact-tier problem, not an Instagram API problem. If you only needed the size chart in a DM, native or an unmetered Instagram workspace may be the cheaper machine. If those 400 people also need SMS, email sequences, and a ManyChat flow you already spent a year building, the contact bill can still be the right bill.

When ManyChat’s price is the correct price

  1. You already run Messenger, SMS, email, or live chat in the same account.
  2. The team lives in ManyChat’s builder and you would recode the business if you left.
  3. Instagram comment-to-DM is one node in a longer multi-channel journey.
  4. You have read current pricing and the Active Contact definition and accepted both.

Leaving because a Twitter thread said ManyChat “cannot do Instagram” is a bad reason. It can. Leaving because 25 contacts is not a shop is a coherent reason — then compare native, CommentLink, and DM-credit tools on meters you can explain.

When an unmetered Instagram tool (or native) is the correct price

The daily work is comments on Reels and posts, optional public replies, a follow-gate, and maybe WhatsApp in one inbox. You do not need ManyChat’s wider channel suite. You do not want a contact ceiling to fire in the same hour the Reel hits Explore.

CommentLink is one option in that bucket. It is not a secret ManyChat. Recreate keywords; there is no flow importer. Official Meta login only. Read whether comment automation is allowed if the fear is policy rather than price.

Old ManyChat accounts versus the March 2026 model

ManyChat’s public help described a pricing model change for accounts created on or after 2 March 2026. If your workspace is older, your bill may not match a blog post written for new accounts. Log in, open billing, and read your plan name and Active Contact (or legacy) meter. Do not cancel based on a competitor’s August 2026 footnote alone.

If you are on Free with 25 Active Contacts and a Reel is about to go out, either pause comment-to-DM, upgrade knowing the contact math, or run that one Reel on native Custom Keywords so ManyChat never sees those contacts. Mixing tools on the same keyword is how people get double DMs — pick one engine per media.

Instagram is free from Meta; the vendor is not always

Write two lines on a sticky note: “Meta Instagram DM fee: $0 per message.” “Vendor fee: contacts / credits / seats / $0.” Then add “Meta WhatsApp conversation fees: billed to my WABA.” ManyChat vs CommentLink arguments that blur those three lines are marketing, not accounting.

A queued unmetered tool can still fail a launch if nobody opens Message Requests. Price is not the only conversion input. Public-reply copy is cheaper than a plan change.

How to verify before you change vendors

  • Open manychat.com/pricing on the date you decide. Screenshot the Free contact cap and the first paid tier.
  • Open help.manychat.com for Active Contact and the 2 March 2026 model notes if you created the account after that date. Older accounts may still be on a previous model — ManyChat has said as much in public help; do not assume your bill matches a new-account blog post.
  • Open Meta Business Suite and confirm whether native Custom Keywords already cover the post.
  • If you compare CommentLink, use the August 2026 vs page numbers as a hint only, then look at the live product.

Questions finance will ask

What starts an Active Contact on our ManyChat plan this month? (Help centre, not a tweet.) What happens at 26 contacts on Free? What is the first paid tier’s contact included — and is “about $14+/mo” still true, or only on CommentLink’s August 2026 comparison page? Do we already have native Custom Keywords covering the same Reel? If we leave, do we keep WhatsApp templates we approved in ManyChat, or do we resubmit on a new WABA connection?

If the honest answers are “we need Messenger and SMS,” stay or pay ManyChat. If the honest answers are “we only DM Instagram commenters and we hate the contact cap,” native or an unmetered Instagram workspace is the pricing conversation. Do not mix those two conclusions.

FAQ

Is ManyChat’s Free plan actually $0?

Public pricing in August 2026 listed Free at $0 with 25 Active Contacts per month and 2 channels for accounts on the 2 March 2026 model. Confirm on manychat.com/pricing.

Does CommentLink charge per Instagram DM?

No. CommentLink does not sell DM credits or Active Contacts. Instagram still enforces an automated-DM rate limit. WhatsApp fees are Meta’s.

Can I use native Comment to Message to avoid ManyChat’s contact cap?

Yes for a simple keyword DM. You lose queue, richer matching, and ManyChat’s other channels. That can be the right trade.

Why do you quote about $14+/mo?

That is the figure on CommentLink’s comparison page dated August 2026. It is not a scraped live price. Verify Essential (or the current first paid tier) on ManyChat.
