How to Add a WhatsApp Link to Your Instagram Bio

A WhatsApp link in bio lets someone start a chat with you in one tap, without saving your number. For businesses that sell or answer questions on WhatsApp, it’s often the shortest route from an Instagram profile to a real conversation. It takes a couple of minutes to set up, and most problems come down to one thing: a wrongly formatted phone number.

Direct link or page button?

You have two ways to do this.

Direct WhatsApp link Button on a bio page
Taps to chat Fewer One more
Other options for visitors None Menu, map, form and more
Good for Businesses that sell entirely over WhatsApp Anyone with more to share
Data on taps Limited Depends on the tool
Pre-filled message Yes Yes

If all you need is chats, link directly. If customers also want your menu, location or prices, a page with a WhatsApp button at the top serves them better. See how this works for small businesses.

Building a wa.me link

WhatsApp’s click to chat help page describes the format. The basic link looks like this:

https://wa.me/[Your WhatsApp Number]

That number is an example. Replace it with your own.

Correct number format

Use your full international number, with the country code, and leave out zeros, brackets, dashes and the plus sign.

Written as In the link Correct?
Country code and number, digits only wa.me/[Your WhatsApp Number] Yes
With a plus sign or dashes wa.me/+[Your WhatsApp Number] No
Leading zero, no country code wa.me/0[Your WhatsApp Number] No, no country code and a leading zero
With brackets or spaces wa.me/([Your WhatsApp Number]) No

The number must have an active WhatsApp account, or the link won’t work properly.

Pre-filled message

You can add a message that appears in the visitor’s text box, ready to send. Add ?text=, followed by your message with spaces written as %20:

https://wa.me/[Your WhatsApp Number]?text=Hi%2C%20I%27d%20like%20a%20quote

The person can edit it before sending, and nothing is sent until they press send. Writing %20 by hand gets tedious, so use an online URL encoder, or a tool that builds the link for you.

Adding it to Instagram

Put the link in your profile’s dedicated link area through your Edit profile screen, not in your bio text. Menus change, so follow what your app shows. Then tap it from your profile, or ask a friend to, and check that it opens the right chat. Instagram profiles may also offer their own contact options. Check your settings to see whether a WhatsApp option is available for your account.

Use your last bio line to tell people what to expect: “Questions? Chat on WhatsApp ↓”.

Writing a useful first message

A pre-filled message solves a real problem: many people don’t know how to begin. A good one also tells you what they want.

Business Pre-filled message
Salon Hi, I’d like to book an appointment.
Bakery Hi, I’d like to order a cake for ___.
Tutor Hi, I’d like to ask about a trial class for Class ___.
Repair shop Hi, I need a quote for my ___.
Online store Hi, I have a question about an order.

Keep it short and natural. If you’re using several links, a slightly different message for each can tell you where someone came from. For example, “Hi, I saw your Reel about wedding cakes” reveals the source. Don’t add anything misleading, because the person can see the text.

Handling the conversations

The link is the easy part. Once people start messaging, you need to keep up.

  • Set expectations. State your hours on your page or in an automatic greeting, if your app offers one.
  • Prepare answers to common questions. Prices, location, timing and delivery come up constantly.
  • Reply promptly. People who message on WhatsApp often expect a quick answer.
  • Keep your number professional. A personal number can get overwhelming, so consider a separate business number.

Once volume grows, it helps to share the load. Our guide to WhatsApp and Instagram in one inbox explains one way to do this. If your leads start with an Instagram comment, see Instagram to WhatsApp handoff. If you plan to message customers in bulk later, read WhatsApp broadcast rules first. WhatsApp documentation covers connecting a WhatsApp account to CommentLink.

WhatsApp in BioFlow

On a BioFlow page, the Messaging block adds a WhatsApp button. You enter your number and an optional pre-filled message, and BioFlow builds the link for you. You can choose the heading, description and button text.

A few details:

  • It’s a button, not an integration. It opens WhatsApp, and the conversation takes place there. Chats don’t appear in your Leads inbox.
  • You can see the taps. Analytics report WhatsApp CTA taps, but not whether the visitor actually sent a message.
  • You’ll need a Link block too. A page needs at least one enabled Link block with a title and address to publish, so add a link to your menu, website or location.

Don’t need a page like this? A simple direct link works fine.

Limits of a click-to-chat link

It’s useful to be clear about what this kind of link can’t do:

  • It doesn’t capture contact details on its own. You only get a number if the person sends the message.
  • It doesn’t tell you who tapped. Counts, at best, and no names.
  • It doesn’t route chats to different staff members.
  • It doesn’t send anything automatically. The visitor has to press send.
  • It can’t help someone without WhatsApp. Offer another route, such as a form or phone number.

That’s why many businesses keep a backup route, like a form. There’s a comparison in ways to capture leads on a page.

FAQ

How do I make a WhatsApp link?

Write https://wa.me/ followed by your full international phone number, with no plus sign, spaces or dashes. For India, that starts with 91. Paste it into your browser to check that it opens a chat with the right number, then add it to your profile’s link area.

Can I pre-fill the message?

Yes. Add ?text= to the end of your link, followed by your message in URL-encoded form, so spaces become %20. The text appears in the visitor’s message box, and they can edit it before sending. Nothing is sent automatically, and they have to press send themselves.

Why does my WhatsApp link fail?

The most common cause is the number’s format: a plus sign, a leading zero or a missing country code. The number must also have an active WhatsApp account. Test your link from another phone, and remove any spaces or punctuation. If you added a message, check that it’s been URL-encoded correctly.

Test it on two phones

Build your link, then tap it from a phone that doesn’t already have your number saved. That’s the experience your customers will have. If you’d like to pair it with hours and a map, add a WhatsApp button in BioFlow.
