How to Add a Link to Your Instagram Bio, Step by Step

Here is how to add a link to your Instagram bio, in short: open your profile, go to the edit screen, and put the address in the dedicated link area, not in your bio text. Then save it and test it as a visitor would. The most common mistake is pasting the URL into the bio itself, where it usually stays as plain text that nobody can tap.

Instagram changes its screens from time to time, and labels can differ between devices, app versions and account types. So treat the names below as a guide, and follow what your own app shows.

The steps

Open Edit profile

Go to your profile in the Instagram app and tap Edit profile. Instagram’s help page on adding a website describes starting from this screen.

Find the link area

Look for a section for links or a website. TechCrunch’s 2023 report described the path as Edit profile, then Links, then Add external link. We couldn’t confirm today’s exact wording for iOS and Android from an official page, so don’t worry if yours looks a little different.

Add your address

Paste the full web address, including https://. If your app offers a title field, add a short description of what’s behind the link, such as “Book a free call”.

Save and test

Save your changes, then open your profile and tap the link. Don’t stop there. Test it the way a stranger would, as described below.

Bio text versus the link area

This trips up a lot of people.

Where you paste it What happens
The bio text It usually stays as plain text that can’t be tapped
The dedicated link area It becomes a tappable link on your profile
A post caption Generally plain text, as Bitly’s guide notes

If your link isn’t tappable, this is the first thing to check. Your bio text can still mention what’s behind the link, and that’s often helpful. “Free meal plan below” gives people a reason to tap.

Link titles and order

If your account lets you add a title, use it. A title tells people what they’ll get before they tap, and a bare address doesn’t.

If you’re able to add more than one link, put the most important one first. How links appear to visitors can vary, so check from another account how yours display.

Which URL should go there

The address you add should match what you’re promoting most right now. You have three main choices.

  • A specific page. Best when you have one offer, such as a product page or booking calendar.
  • Your website’s homepage. Fine if it works well on a phone, and it’s obvious what to do next.
  • A link in bio page. Useful if you have several destinations or want to collect enquiries.

Before deciding, see what belongs on the page and whether you need one at all. Meta’s terms apply to where you link, so avoid anything misleading or against its rules.

If you do use a page, BioFlow is CommentLink’s option. It doesn’t need an Instagram connection. You paste the page’s address into your profile yourself.

How to test it as a visitor

You’re logged in and familiar with your own profile, so your view isn’t quite the same as a stranger’s.

  1. Use another account or ask a friend to open your profile and tap the link.
  2. Test it on a phone, inside the Instagram app. That’s where most visitors will use it.
  3. Check where it lands. Does it open the right page, and does that page make sense on a small screen?
  4. Test any forms or downloads on the destination.
  5. Try it on mobile data as well as Wi-Fi if you can.

Look for hesitations as well as errors. If you have to think about what the link does, a new visitor will too.

If the link does not appear

Work through these in order:

  1. Check that you saved before leaving the edit screen.
  2. Check that it’s in the link area, not the bio text.
  3. Check the address for typos, and include https://.
  4. Update the app and reopen it.
  5. Try another destination. If a different address works, the first one may have been rejected or flagged.
  6. Check your account status, in case there’s a restriction on your account.

If you’re also running automation, it’s worth a look at the difference between business and creator accounts. Once your link is live, the next question is whether anyone taps it. Earning more taps on your link covers that.

FAQ

Why isn’t my Instagram link clickable?

The usual reason is that the address is in your bio text and not in the dedicated link area. Move it there through your profile’s edit screen. If it’s already in the right place, check for typos, update your app and test it from another account, in case the problem is the destination.

Can I add a link on desktop?

Instagram’s help pages describe editing your profile on the web as well as in the app, but options can differ between them. We couldn’t confirm that every link feature is available on desktop at the time of writing. If you can’t find what you need on the web, use the mobile app.

Do I need a business account?

Reports from Instagram’s 2023 launch said link options were open to all accounts, and personal profiles have long been able to add a website. Check your own Edit profile screen to see what’s available. Account type does matter for other features, such as insights and automation.

Save it, then check it

Adding the link takes a minute. Checking that it works for a stranger takes another two, and it’s the step most people skip. Once it’s working, make sure there’s something good at the other end. You can create a page worth linking to, and there’s more on the creator page.

Link to a page worth the tap

Build a short BioFlow page, then add its address to your Instagram profile.
