What to Ask an Instagram Lead Before Sending a Sales Link

If you promised a lookbook, send the lookbook. If you promised a sales call, do not paste Calendly into the first bubble for every “price?” comment. What to ask an Instagram lead before sending a sales link should be short enough to survive Message Requests and specific enough that a “next week” versus “just looking” actually changes routing.

This page is the question list — not the comment-side keyword strategy (qualify leads from comments) and not the flow canvas (lead qualification flow). High-ticket scripts with more language: high-ticket Instagram DM qualification scripts. One private reply still has to carry anything you promised in public.

Questions that earn the next message

Coaches: “Are you hiring for yourself or a team, and is this for the next 30 days?” A “team, this quarter” goes to a closer. A “just exploring notes” gets the syllabus URL, not a 45-minute slot.

Shops: “Need a size, a restock, or a wholesale sheet?” Retail restock is a waitlist form. Wholesale is a different PDF and a human if MOQ is custom.

Local: “Which city should I check availability for?” A Pune studio cannot honour a Bengaluru BOOK without saying so. If they answer a city you do not serve, send the honest no plus a waitlist — do not send the calendar.

SaaS: “Are you evaluating for yourself, or do you need security/legal on the thread?” Self-serve gets the demo link. Legal gets human-handoff.

Questions that kill the thread

A form’s worth of fields in the first DM. Income interrogation on message one. Anything you would not ask a stranger who just commented PRICE on a Reel. “What’s your monthly revenue?” before you send the public rate card is how they mute you.

  • More than two questions before any asset they were promised.
  • Asking for Aadhaar, GSTIN, or a company PAN in Instagram DMs.
  • Medical history in a clinic BOOK flow. Collect that on a form you actually secure.
  • “Reply with 1–7 for these options” when a button node would do.
  • Repeating the caption as a quiz. They already commented the keyword.

Fit the question to the caption promise

Caption taught LOOK. Do not ask budget. Send the lookbook; if they then ask wholesale, ask MOQ. Caption taught BOOK. You may ask city or party size before the calendar if availability actually depends on it. Caption taught PRICE. Send the published sheet; ask custom-scope only if they say the sheet is not enough.

Interior studio, comment PRICE. Good first DM: “Public 2BHK/3BHK sheet: [URL]. If this is a resale or a 4BHK, reply with locality + timeline and a senior advisor will quote.” The question is optional. Silent people still have the sheet.

Photography. Comment WEDDING. Good: “Ceremony city + month?” because travel changes the package. Bad: “What’s your budget to the rupee?” on message one. Offer bands on a page instead.

After they answer

Send the link, tag the intent, or hand off. Do not invent a CRM sync CommentLink does not ship — tags and email collect exist; HubSpot-style sync does not. See sync Instagram DM leads into a CRM.

  1. Match their words. If they said “next week, two people,” the next bubble should use that, not a generic CTA.
  2. Buyer path: sales URL or calendar you actually honour.
  3. Browser path: the guide or sheet, tag browser, stop pitching.
  4. Messy path: human-handoff. Do not ask question three.

If they answer with a novel, that is the messy path. Conditions can catch CITY names you listed. They cannot parse a paragraph about a divorce and a rush booking. Stop the bot.

A short list you can actually staff

  1. Write three questions max for the whole account. Pick one per keyword.
  2. Put the promised asset in the same first DM when the caption owed it.
  3. Map answers to tags: self / team, city, wholesale, complaint.
  4. Calendar or checkout only on the buyer answers.
  5. Test: “just looking,” “this week,” and “I want a lawyer.” Three outcomes.

Mistakes that turn the chat into an interrogation

  • Calendly on every PRICE. Instead: sheet first, calendar after fit.
  • Asking the same city question they already typed in the comment. Instead: read the comment; only ask if missing.
  • Using ai_reply to invent a discount if they hesitate. Instead: scripted prices. AI is language, not checkout.
  • Collecting phone before any value. Instead: collect after they want a callback, or not at all if the URL is enough.
  • Sending them to WhatsApp to “finish the form.” Instead: they must write WhatsApp themselves; the comment is not that opt-in.

Copyable question one-liners

Coach: “Yourself or a team — and is this for the next 30 days? I can send the syllabus either way.”

Shop: “Size/restock, or wholesale sheet?”

Clinic: “Which location (Bandra / Andheri) and is this a first visit or a follow-up?” Do not ask symptoms in DMs.

Home services: “Society / area + this week or later? I’ll send the published visit fee either way.”

How many questions before the sales link? Usually one or two. If you need a full intake, send a form link after they reply — or book a call.

What CommentLink cannot do with questions

We cannot magically know budget from a comment emoji. We cannot sync Instagram to your CRM as a native product. We cannot skip Meta’s one-private-reply rule by splitting the sales link across silent days. We cannot run a Typeform inside Instagram. We can send_buttons with two intents, condition on keywords they type, collect_email/phone, add_tag, and human_handoff.

Do not treat this list as a Live comment script. There is no Live trigger. Ask on the Reel keyword path, or in an inbound DM.

If they never answer the question

They used the one private reply. If the caption promised a lookbook, they already have it — or you failed the architecture. If the caption promised a call, a silent thread means no calendar, which is correct: you did not earn the slot. Do not schedule a delay that pastes Calendly on day two. That is a second private reply attempt on a silent commenter.

Restaurant catering. First DM: “Published platters: [URL]. Party size + date if you need a custom menu.” Silent: they have platters. Reply “80 pax, 12 Oct, Pune”: human. Reply “just the PDF”: you already sent it; stop. Reply with a health complaint about last night’s dinner: support, not a second platter upsell.

Real estate. First DM can ask locality only if the comment was a bare PRICE with no area. If they already wrote “PRICE Whitefield 2BHK,” do not ask city again. Repeating the comment back as a quiz is how you kill a warm lead. Ask only the missing field that changes the next URL or the desk.

FAQ

How many questions before the sales link?

Usually one or two. If you need a full intake, send a form link after they reply — or book a call. Put anything you promised in the caption into message one.

What should a coach ask?

Yourself versus team, and whether this is the next 30 days. Send the syllabus either way. Do not start with income.

What should a shop ask?

Size/restock versus wholesale. Those are different PDFs. Do not ask revenue.

Can I ask for ID or GSTIN in the first DM?

You should not. That belongs on a form or a human thread after they are actually buying.

What if they ignore the question but wanted the lookbook?

You still owed the lookbook. Put it in message one. The question cannot hostage a promised file.

Does answering a question count as CRM sync?

No. Tag them in CommentLink. Export or copy into your CRM yourself. We do not ship HubSpot-style sync.

What if they already answered in the comment?

Do not ask it again. Use the comment text. Only ask the field that is actually missing and that changes routing.
