ManyChat's 25-Contact Free Plan: What It Means for Instagram

Visual explanation of the 25 Active Contacts concept in ManyChat's free plan for Instagram

ManyChat is a real product with a real Free plan. Treating it as “not free” is as sloppy as treating 25 contacts as unlimited. This article uses public ManyChat help and pricing language as it stood in August 2026. Plans change. Verify on help.manychat.com and manychat.com/pricing before you budget.

CommentLink’s comparison page in August 2026 listed ManyChat paid tiers from about $14/mo. ManyChat help (reviewed 20 August 2026) listed Essential at $14/month billed yearly with 250 Active Contacts included. Monthly billing and regional checkout can differ. We still will not treat a third-party recap as the live invoice.

If you already know you need TikTok, Telegram, and a large flow library, stay inside ManyChat’s docs. If you need Instagram comment-to-DM without a contact ceiling on the vendor’s side, read CommentLink as a ManyChat alternative, CommentLink vs ManyChat, and the dated money article ManyChat pricing vs a free Instagram DM tool.

The 2 March 2026 pricing model

ManyChat help describes a new pricing model dated 2 March 2026 for accounts created on or after that date. Older accounts may still be on a previous model. ManyChat has said switching may not be available yet. Two workspaces can therefore see two different Free experiences. Do not argue with a teammate using a 2024 screenshot.

If your ManyChat account predates that cutoff, this article’s Free-plan numbers may not be your live numbers. Open your billing UI and the help article for your account type.

What Free includes on the new model (public help, August 2026)

  • Price: $0.
  • Up to 25 Active Contacts per month.
  • Two channels. Help lists Instagram, TikTok, Messenger, and Telegram among channel options — you still only get two on Free.
  • 1 user / 1 inbox seat.

Active Contact, in ManyChat’s framing, is a person you interact with in a billing period. A viral Instagram Reel that DMs 80 unique commenters is not a 25-contact month. That is the Instagram-specific punchline. The cap is people you touched, not a cute trial of the flow builder.

What this does and does not mean for automations

Do not invent that ManyChat always hard-stops automations the moment you exceed a number. Official help describes paid plans that can continue with overage fees. Free-plan behaviour when you exceed 25 Active Contacts can differ from paid overage — ManyChat’s help is the source, not this paragraph. Read the current Free-plan and overage articles on help.manychat.com instead of assuming “the bot dies” or “it silently bills.”

Instagram’s own hourly DM cap still applies inside ManyChat, CommentLink, and native Business Suite. A contact-meter and a send-rate-limit are different ceilings. Hitting 25 Active Contacts is a ManyChat billing construct. Hitting ~200 automated Instagram DMs in an hour is CommentLink’s product pace in its queue — not a published Meta SLA. See how CommentLink paces Instagram DMs.

Instagram jobs that fit 25 contacts

A local studio booking a handful of consults. A founder testing one keyword on a quiet post. A proof that ManyChat’s Instagram channel works before you pay. Those are honest Free-plan uses.

A Reel you boost. A giveaway. A catalogue drop. A creator with a normal weekday comment volume. Those are how you burn 25 Active Contacts before lunch. ManyChat is allowed to meter that. You are allowed to pick a different tool for that job.

CommentLink’s shape next to that meter

CommentLink does not bill Active Contacts. It also does not include TikTok or Telegram. It is Instagram plus WhatsApp on official Meta APIs. Native Comment to Message remains free inside Meta if your volume is tiny and you do not need a queue or follow-gate — native comment-to-DM vs CommentLink.

Paid ManyChat may still be the correct buy when the workspace is already a ManyChat operation: several channels, existing flows, a team that lives on that canvas. Switching for a 25-contact reason alone is optional. Switching because Instagram is the whole product and the contact meter is the wrong unit — that is the comparison the ManyChat alternative page is for.

How to verify in ten minutes

  1. Open manychat.com/pricing and note the date. Screenshot it for your records.
  2. Open help.manychat.com articles for Free plan, Active Contacts, and the March 2026 model. Confirm whether your account is new-model or legacy.
  3. Count unique people you would DM in a normal campaign week. If the number is routinely above 25, Free ManyChat is not your production plan.
  4. Confirm Instagram is one of the two channels you would actually pick on Free. If you need Instagram and WhatsApp and TikTok, you are already off Free’s two-channel limit.
  5. Only then compare CommentLink or native Meta.

Active Contact math for one Instagram week

Suppose your Reel gets 40 people who comment LINK and receive a DM. That is 40 Active Contacts if ManyChat counts each as an interaction in the period — well over 25. A quiet carousel with 12 commenters fits. A giveaway with 200 unique commenters does not. The unit is people you interact with, not automations you built, not keywords you stored.

A teammate who “just tests” from three extra accounts also spends the meter. So does a follow-up DM to the same person later in the billing period if ManyChat still treats them as active — confirm the current help definition rather than assuming once-counted-always-free or the reverse. Help.manychat.com is the source. This blog will not invent a unique-versus-recurring rule they did not write.

One inbox seat

Free’s 1 user / 1 inbox seat means the founder is the inbox. A shop that needs a second person on DMs is already looking at paid ManyChat or at a product that does not seat-gate the shared inbox the same way. CommentLink’s team inbox is part of the workspace model; ManyChat’s seating is theirs to define on paid plans. Do not assume either vendor’s 2024 blog post is still true — open the live help article.

Two channels, four names on the list

Help lists Instagram, TikTok, Messenger, and Telegram as channel examples for the two-channel Free cap. You pick two. Instagram plus TikTok is a common pair. Instagram plus Telegram is a pair. If your actual job is Instagram plus WhatsApp, confirm WhatsApp’s plan-gating on ManyChat before you treat Free as an Instagram+WhatsApp studio. CommentLink’s job is that pair after you connect a number; Meta still bills WhatsApp conversations.

Overage versus stop: do not guess

Paid ManyChat help describes continuing with overage fees on paid plans. Free plan details when you exceed 25 Active Contacts can differ. We will not write “automations always freeze” or “they always charge your card” as fact. Screenshot help.manychat.com the day you decide. If you need a vendor that does not use Active Contacts as the billable unit for Instagram comment-to-DM, compare product pages the same day rather than a year-old thread.

What CommentLink’s vs page said in August 2026

The CommentLink versus ManyChat page listed paid tiers from about $14/mo and told you to re-check ManyChat. ManyChat help on 20 August 2026 listed Essential at $14/month billed yearly with 250 Active Contacts. Confirm the live pricing page; monthly and regional prices can differ. Native Instagram Comment to Message remains $0 from Meta. CommentLink remains without a contact meter on our side. Three different price stories; none of them cancel Instagram’s hourly send cap.

If you are an older ManyChat account, ignore the 25-contact paragraph until help says you are on the March 2026 model. If you are a new account, treat 25 Active Contacts as a real production ceiling for Instagram, not as a generous trial of the flow builder. If you need Instagram comment-to-DM for a boosted Reel, Free ManyChat on that model is the wrong unit of measurement. Paid ManyChat may still win if you need TikTok and Telegram in the same vendor. CommentLink wins if you wanted Instagram plus WhatsApp without that contact meter and you accept a smaller channel list. Native wins if one keyword on one post is the entire job.

FAQ

Is ManyChat Free $0 in August 2026?

Public help for the 2 March 2026 model lists Free at $0 with up to 25 Active Contacts per month. Confirm live. Legacy accounts may differ.

Does CommentLink also cap 25 contacts?

No. CommentLink does not use an Active Contact meter. Meta’s Instagram send limits still apply.

What does ManyChat cost after Free?

ManyChat help (20 August 2026) listed Essential at $14/month billed yearly with 250 Active Contacts. Monthly billing and regional checkout can differ. Confirm manychat.com/pricing rather than this blog.

Can I run Instagram and WhatsApp on ManyChat Free’s two channels?

Help lists Instagram, TikTok, Messenger, and Telegram. WhatsApp availability and plan-gating change — confirm on ManyChat. CommentLink includes WhatsApp in the same workspace after you connect a number; Meta still bills WhatsApp conversations.

Does a test comment from my own account count as an Active Contact?

Treat testers as real interactions unless ManyChat help says otherwise. Use a second account and assume it spends the meter. Do not burn 25 contacts on QA the week you launch a giveaway. CommentLink does not use this meter; you still spend Instagram’s hourly cap on tests.

If I am on the old ManyChat model, should I switch?

ManyChat has said switching may not be available yet. Do not force a migration from a blog post. Open billing and help for your account. Compare the live Free and paid stories to CommentLink and to native Meta on the same day, with a screenshot.

Is 25 contacts the same as 25 DMs?

No. Active Contact is a person you interact with in the period, per ManyChat’s definition. One person can receive several DMs and still be one contact — or not, if their help text counts differently. Read the current definition. Either way, 25 people is small for a viral Reel.
